Election 2011
In Room 9 we are studying the 2011 Election.
We are researching a political party of our choice, looking at who is in the party and what their policies are, especially the ones that effect us (like education and family issues).
We are also forming our own political parties in the class.
We will run a campaign, make advertising material, and have a ballot vote.
The winning party will run the class for a day.

Rainbow Ski day...
Check here from 6am Tuesday morning to find out if we are heading to the snow or not.
Rainbow is CLOSED!
Just had the call through to say Rainbow is a no go for today. The crazy weather is here for another day. We will try to book another day.
See you at school at the normal time in your uniform.
We will send our free days to Rainbow and if they can match one of those with one of their free days then we'll get another ski date. This should happen over the next few days and we'll let you know what's happening with a postponement date as soon as we hear. Thanks for your patience.

Enviro-art
We collected different plants from our school environment and sketched them. Then we chose a few to put together, and created some enviro-art. We used pastel to colour the plants, and learned how to move the pastel around to create lines on the leaves/petals etc. We dyed the background blue to represent the sky.

Lindy Kelly
Today Lindy Kelly came to talk to us about her books: "Fern of Maru Bay" and "Fern and the Shipwrecked Monkey."
We love her books!
She told us lots of funny stories about when she was young. It seems as though she was a cheeky, fun 10 year old!

Me and My Environment
CTS has officially become an ENVIROSCHOOL.
We have looked closely at our school environment and talked about the parts we like (and the parts we don't!).
We are in the process of making 3D models of the school, including all the natural and non-natural aspects of the environment.
This is proving more difficult than we expected!!
The design, planning and construction is hard work.
Working as a cohesive team is even harder work!!
BUT we are getting there slowly.

Wow! What a book!
We have just finished reading the book: "Fern of Maru Bay" by Lindy Kelly.
She is a NZ authour, who lives in Nelson and has grandchildren who go to Clifton Terrace.
It was a very interesting book and it gave us an insight into lots of things:
How different people live.
How different people view the world and the people in it.
The authorities involved in law and child services.
How different animals might behave. (Animals were personified well in the book.)
Mrs McCormack couldn't put the book down each afternoon without Room 9 calling out for more.
We believe that Lindy Kelly is going to write a sequel to "Fern of Maru Bay" and we can't wait!
We hope she might talk to us about her books one day.
Click HERE to read more about Lindy.

Native Trees at Camp
It's not long now till we set off for Marahau next Tuesday!!!!!! Hopefully you're finding all the bits and pieces you'll need, now is the time to let us know if you need a hand with anything!
Last week our focus was researching a native bird and drawing it. This week we'll finish off our drawings by adding colour. Both classes will get a visit from the NZ Red Cross who will take us through a People Savers' first aid course. Rm 9 will have their one on Monday and Rm 10 on Tuesday. Make sure you pay attention because you never know when you might need to use these life saving skills! Also, we'll be using the skills you've learnt to put together some Comic Art strips explaining what you would do in one the situations you'll be learning about.
This week we are also going to become familiar with a Native Tree that you might find in the national park. Just like last week, here are some trees that are found in the Abel Tasman National Park. Your job is to choose one and using the links below briefly fill out your research sheet. Make sure you look carefully at the pictures of your chosen tree as you will be drawing a detailed picture of it, its leaves and flowers etc...
Beech
Flax
Lancewood
Manuka
Rimu
Matai
Totara
Miro
Kahikatea
Pohutukawa
Rata
Ferns (choose one type)

Do you know what you are bringing on camp day for your pot luck meal contribution, and your home baking?
Lots to do, so little time....

Native Birds at Camp
The countdown to camp is now on! We're getting groups and activities organised and even planning what we're going to eat on the first night!
Today we started our Camp Unit. We are going to learn about the Abel Tasman National Park; its birdlife, native trees, early Maori settlement and even learn some first aid.
The first task we are going to tackle is learning about native birds found in the area.
Below is a selection of native birds found in the National Park
Bell birds
Fantail
Kaka
South Island Robin
Shining Cockoo (pīpīwharauroa)
Morepork
Wood pigeon
Tui
Weka
Little blue penguin
Pukeko
Use the links about Native Birds in our curriculum links section to work your way through the tasks, and research your bird. Remember to take note of what your bird looks like so you can draw a detailed & labelled picture.

Busy week...
It has been a busy week so far in Room 9. We are getting into our routine work after testing week. Well done on all the testing you completed last week! You sure worked hard!
We observed the 2 minutes silence on Tuesday 1st March at 12.51pm to mark one week since the devastating Christchurch earthquake. Room 9 - I was impressed with your respectful behaviour during the 2 minutes silence.
We also wore our purple clothes on Tuesday to help raise money for Purple Cake Day, and the children of the Haiti earthquake.
It is great to see you all working hard to support the people affected by disasters. Well done.
TEA BY THE SEA
On Friday it is our annual Tea By The Sea event. Remember this is a rubbish free event so you will need your cups/plates/knives&forks etc, and you will need to take your rubbish home with you.
Looking forward to seeing you there! It is always a great evening, with lots of yummy food and groovy entertainment.
See you there!
And good luck to all who are doing the Weetbix Triathlon this Sunday. I'll see you there too.
